Derek Calhoun, 23, was killed on June 23rd while serving his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Derek died in Taji, Iraq of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle, along with 3 other soldiers.
Armored Tank Driver Specialist Derek Calhoun was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
Derek was a long-time member of South Lindsay Baptist Church. He attended church with his parents, Alan and Lou, and his sister Lanesha. At a young age, he accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.
Months ago, Derek was injured in an attack and had recently spent time in the hospital, recovering from shrapnel wounds. His injuries were severe enough to require two surgeries. His hand was severely damaged from the previous attack, so he was going through physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Derek was a graduate of the Wright Business School and was a certified medical assistant. He hoped to work in the medical field after finishing his service.
Derek loved fishing, all kinds of sports, and spending time with his family. His three nieces and one nephew were all very special to him and they will miss him deeply.
Your watch has ended and your mission is now complete. You are an American Hero!
While you leave us in body, you live with us forever in spirit. We know you are in God's loving arms. |
